We did not get sober just to be miserable

“Creativity is the natural order of life. Life is energy: pure creative energy.” — Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way (1992)

I was inspired to start creative sobriety as a result of my experiences in early recovery in 2020. We all had so much time on our hands with the world shut down, and for someone early in recovery, that was a dangerous thing. Fortunately, in my last month in residential treatment, I discovered the joy of creating Christmas presents for my family using only what I had on hand and my imagination. That experience lit a spark in me.

During the worst of the COVID-19 lockdown, I spent a lot of time on YouTube exploring different hands-on hobbies. I fell in love with woodworking and was enchanted by the possibilities of what I could do with concrete, of all things. My brain about exploded when I discovered epoxy resin.

The power of possibility brought me such joy and hope from day to day that my life became a big adventure of exploration. I was not just focused on staying sober; hanging on by my fingernails; I was living sober. That is what I want to share with you. I want to help you to realize your own joy, and as I insist to my friends, family, and clients, “I did not get sober just to be miserable.” I know you didn’t either.

Join me, join us, in contributing to the journey. Be an active participant in your own life by exploring your own creativity. You don’t have to be an artist. You simply have to work to embrace your own creative human nature.
